Policing in Thurston

The policing team is based at Stowmarket Police Station, from where the officers cover a large part of the Mid-Suffolk District. This is the Safer Neighbourhood Team which is the team covering Thurston and works with the parish of Thurston and partner agencies in our community to identify and address local concern.

Thurston currently has an agreement with Suffolk Constabulary for a match funded Police Community Support Officer for a period of a year which started on 4th April 2016. These PCSOs are in addition to the current establishment of local SNTs and help to strengthen not only the teams, but also the partnerships that exist between other organisations and the police. They are deployed to serve the community but also have specific duty to meet the requirements of the partner agency/business. This role is now covered by PCSO 3204 Matt Smith.

At the Public Meeting held on Thursday 12th January 2017 those in attendance were shown a short presentation on the future of Policing in Thurston. A Question and Answer session followed with questions being answered by the Chairman of the Parish Council, Clerk to the Parish Council, Sgt Andrew Martin of Stowmarket SNT and Mr Leigh Jenkins, Business Liaison Manager for Suffolk Constabulary. The vote that was taken at the meeting indicated that the majority of those in attendance were prepared to support an increase in the parish precept to fully fund a PCSO dedicated to Thurston. This would equate to an increase of 16 pence per week for a Band D Property for the year 2017 -2018. All other bands would see a pro-rota increase. This recommendation will be put to the Parish Council at its meeting on 18th January 2017.
